DESCRIPTION
Matera, European Capital of Culture and Unesco Heritage Site, is one of the oldest city in the world. Its territory preserves old settlements dating back to the Paleolithic Age. Matera is, the so-called, city of the “Sassi” (Stones); the original town developed from natural caves dug into the rock, then shaped into even more complex structures such as the two big natural amphitheaters, Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano. Visit a cave-house entirely and typically furnished to understand the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of the ancient Sassi districts, before their abandonment. Also, visit to a Cave Church, dating back to the 8th Century, the most important in the history of Matera.
At the end of the walk, visit to a bakery and tasting of Matera bread, which has become an IGP product thanks to its historical and organoleptic qualities.
At the end of the guided tour, a lunch based on Lucanian dishes awaits us, a traditional cuisine, made of vegetables, legumes and cereals with an economical use of meat. We are accommodated in a typical room carved into the rock, with stone barrel ceilings in the Sassi district.
*Optional and exclusive: the Matera tour by “Calessino” (a modern, eco-friendly, three-wheeled “carriage”), the only vehicle enabled to access the ancient streets of the Sassi while comfortably seated and living precious moments in maximum comfort.
